Subverge is a side project by Henrik Karlsson from dark electro-industrial band Seven Trees. In his own words he describes the project and music as “ritualistic, sombre, melancholic dark ambient with sprinkles of death industrial and modern classical”. Subverge was formed in 2014 as an outlet for music that didn’t fit the classic verse/chorus concept which he felt was somewhat restraining when working on Seven Trees material – the tracks composed under the Subverge moniker are instead presented with a fairly experimental layout, without being too far out.
The debut album “Zechrum” is sort of a “back to the roots” dark ambient album, inspired by early Cold Meat Industry releases such as those by Raison D’Etre and In Slaughter Natives. “Zechrum” is however a fairly diverse album, with tracks ranging from pure dark ambient to bombastic martial pieces, forming a compelling entity held together by Henrik’s signature layering of dramatic strings, luscious pads and melancholic piano – sometimes presented in a way that leans towards early Delerium.
